About Vernon Richards

I’m a Quality Coach & Tester that helps orgs, teams & individuals understand the relationship between quality & testing to help them build better products & deliver more effective services. I’ve been testing since 2002 starting with video games on PS2, Xbox & PC. It may not sound like a real job but it’s the truth! By day I’m a Senior Expert Quality Engineer at a health tech night I run Abode of Quality. Here is one of my core values:

“The problem is not the problem. The problem is your attitude (& how you’re thinking) about the problem.”– Captain Jack Sparrow (the part in brackets was my addition though!)

I believe that quality & testing problems are actually people problems in disguise! Often the cause of these problems is misaligned goals, different perspectives, low empathy for colleagues, and the list goes on. Using my coaching skills in the quality & testing space, I believe the most effective way to serve the business, is to help teams & individuals gain new perspectives about themselves & their teammates.

Speech title

How we’re setting up QEs to fail: How I Think Quality Engineering, Glue Work And Quiet Quitting Are Related and what we can do about it!

Talk description

In 20 years of testing, I’ve noticed a pattern:
  • People are trying to influence the system, so software delivery becomes more effective and better products become more likely.
  • This work is Technical Leadership, and it often occurs outside the job description and others’ expectations.
  • Doing work over and above your job description for no recognition is tiring, and people are opting out of that.
Many, MANY, MANY testers and quality engineers find themselves in this situation!

I’ll share my findings about how quality professionals find themselves in this predicament, how those dynamics manifest in our teams and what we can do to prevent them from happening or handle them when they do.

Key takeaways:

  • Define glue work, quiet quitting, high-value testing and quality engineering.
  • Describe how those concepts integrate.
  • Explore the consequences of that integration and share possible solutions
